GROWING HOYAS IN HOT ARIZONA
(By Awanda Clark) |
Hoyas are my passion and living in Arizona presents a challenge to growing them. I have found innovative ways of providing the
environment necessary to grow happy, healthy and flowering hoyas. I do have a greenhouse now, but prior to getting the greenhouse,
I used the following methods to grow healthy and happy hoyas.
During spring and fall, I put all of my hoyas outside underneath orange trees where they would receive early morning sun. I would
also sit buckets of water underneath to provide humidity. Summer month require more innovative methods, which included using mini
greenhouses from BigLots. I would use 3 inch electric fans inside to provide air circulation. Sitting the hoyas on humidity trays
provides the needed humidity.
I use a soil-less fast draining soil from Lowes called "Smart Soil" and my watering depends on the hoya's need and not mine.
Just recently I switched from plastic pots to clay pots. While I realize this will cause me to spend more time watering during the
summer months, the growth, color and healthy looking hoyas are more than worth it.
While using the pre-greenhouse method, I grew healthy, happy and blooming hoyas. It just takes a little imagination and the right
environment.
